Potential themes/existing titles for fanfic (anime/manga focussed)

Unfortunately Prince of Tennis is a hard series to get fanfictions for along the lines of what I have been working on, as it has a fanfic base that seems to consist quite heavily of people that write 'slash' or 'yaoi' fanfictions that break the characters personalities. That being said, quality fanfictions DO exist, it just takes a bit of digging.
Sample fanfics found in my wanderings:
"Echizen, our Buchou"
(additional information - Buchou is Japanese for 'captain')
I thought this was quite a good fanfiction as the characters were written mostly within their original design intent, but having been matured enough to show that the fanfiction was written as an extension after the 'canon' storyline. There is some minor spelling and grammatical errors, but besides those, it is a quality fanfiction.
Life after Seigaku
This fanfiction was created as a 'sequel' of sorts to the previous fanfiction, 'Echizen, our Buchou', to try to show what the author envisioned the characters would be doing with their life after they graduated from High School and moved on into the 'real world'. The exposition is well-mixed with the narrative, the characters retain their personality that was intended from the original story and the fanfiction moves at a smooth, steady pace. Again, all in all, I feel this was a good fanfiction, which is why I drew on it as a potential source of inspiration.
Reappearance of the Samurai
Cycling Moments (this was probably the best inspiration for my fanfiction)
Drink of Hell
this was a VERY close second for inspiration for my fanfiction, one of my favorite recurring gags in this series was that one character by the name of Inui has a habit of making bizarre - not to mention foul-tasting - drinks and forcing them to drink them as punishment for challenges.

Ryoma Echizen
Kunimitsu Tezuka (in my fanfiction I refer to him as 'Tezuka' since his teammates and even his friends seem to rarely call him "Kunimitsu", keeping with the series)
Issues regarding the fanfiction:
Both the key characters that appear in my fanfiction have a fairly large repetoire of skills that they can make use of, unfortunately due to the relatively short word limit for the fanfiction, I could not go into much detail or describe more than a couple of each players skills.
I guess the challenge will be for you to limit yourself to 800 words!!! :)

ReplyDeleteSorry guys, had a lot going on, plus I've not been very well on and off over the past couple of weeks >< Has been making things more than a little stressful.
ReplyDeleteSorry, just an additional bit of info, I have been working at a fairly steady pace on my fanfiction, old habits tend to be hard to break though, I'm the kind of person that is quite critical of my work and finds it... difficult to put up flawed work, which I realise is the intent of this, so that other people can comment and give feedback to improve the work, but like I mentioned, old habits die hard. It is something I will REALLY have to give the boot if I want to get anywhere in this course.
Deletegah, being unable to edit my posts drives me up the wall at times, I think of other things I want to write, but I can't add them in, I need to make a fresh post.
DeleteThe biggest issue for me with this project is the fact that a VERY large portion of the fanfictions that exist around the two characters that I wanted to focus on for my scene is what would be considered 'slash' or 'yaoi' fanfiction (basically characters which may not even have any interest in each other beyond a purely platonic level being pretty much forced into a romantic situation, even if it would be considered out of their usual personality or character typing)
As can probably be seen from my actual fanfiction, my work is going to be more along the lines of the traditional personalities and the theming of the series, where there is friendly rivalry between the characters as well as a desire to be better than the other.
Though I know nothing about your choice in fanfic I was interested. I read through your final and it was pretty cool. I enjoyed the bits on the special moves the players have and maybe like your self I wished I had seen more.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I would have loved to go into more detail but with the word limit, even allowing a bit of leeway over the standard limit, I would have quite easily gone WELL over.
